30. Partners in Conservation

A Memorandum of Understanding was officially signed between Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP) and Conservation International (CI) in February 2009.

CI is a global leader in biodiversity conservation. CI believes that Earth’s natural heritage must be maintained if future generations are to thrive spiritually, culturally and economically. CI’s mission is to conserve the Earth’s living heritage, our global biodiversity, and to demonstrate that human societies are able to live harmoniously with nature. CI applies innovations in science, economics, policy and community participation to protect the Earth’s richest regions of plant and animal diversity in the biodiversity hotspots, high biodiversity wilderness areas as well as seascapes (important marine regions) around the globe. CI works in more than 40 countries on four continents.

AWWP carries out science based conservation work focusing on rare and threatened species through “in situ” and “ex-situ” projects in Qatar and outside of Qatar. AWWP urges public interest in ecological aspects of wildlife conservation. It develops and implements plans and projects to preserve and ensure the survival of rare and threatened species through “ex situ” captive breeding programs and through “in situ” conservation projects in relation with the establishment of protected areas.

Both partners recognize that their collaboration will maximize their effectiveness in the establishment and management of conserving biological diversity and in fulfilling their respective missions. The MoU reflects the goal of the two organizations to unify efforts in order to optimize progress in areas of mutual interest in species and habitat conservation.
